I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again, God knows how to speak to us in ways that resonate with where we are in life and what we respond to. I’ve written many times about how God speaks to me in the wildest situations: a car accident, a leaky faucet, a random encounter with an elderly woman, and in this case a 1980s hairstyle!! Yes people, I said hair!
I have witnessed the same woman, more often than I’d like to, flaunt this 1980s hairstyle faithfully like it’s HOT! I think it’s referred to as a mullet. I know there’s a few of you out there that used to rock a similar hairstyle but the difference is you moved on with the times. You discovered new, fresh looks that in 20 years you’ll also outgrow because fashion and style evolves. Unfortunately there are some people who don’t evolve and will resist change at all cost. I suppose it’s possible that she just really likes the style and she may truly feel like it best fits her even in 2014, but what if she’s just fearful of change? What if she likes that she knows what to expect and has confidence in the stylist who’s been doing it the same way for 30 plus years?!!
I often find myself staring at her hair and wondering “Who are her friends?!” I mean really! This really isn’t to bash anyone. I respect individuality and not following every trend. I can say that there are some trends that come and go without me ever batting an eye. If everyone is wearing it, then it’s likely I won’t be interested unless I just really like the style for myself. So I get it! I also know that trends can resurrect themselves in a new era but it’s usually with an added twist. Even in cases where it’s the same thing, it’s recognized as being a retro look. But there’s a difference between not following trends and being stuck in the past.
Almost instantly, after questioning what this woman could possibly be thinking when she looks in the mirror, I heard Him ask me: How many times are you going to deal with the same issues? When are you going to get past this or that? Don’t you see all the new possibilities if you changed the way you’re thinking? In other words, God was letting me know “We off that!”
There are things that you are letting define who you are and how you act based on past circumstances. You have the same attitude. You have the same insecurity. You hang around the same negative people. You’re entire thought process is stuck in the past. If only our played out thoughts were as evident as played out hairstyles. I wonder how many of us would have a sense of urgency about growing up in our thinking if we were considered “out of style.” Unfortunately, getting comfortable in old habits is often acceptable in our society. We justify them as just being who we are. The issue is that if who you are doesn’t line up with who God called you to be, you will most certainly miss out in life and all that you could grow to be.
Examine those ways that have held you back. Ask God to reveal areas in your life and in your thought process that need upgrading. Each time you feel like they’re resurfacing, imagine that awful mullet picture in this post! Or if that doesn’t do it, just imagine the most played out fashion you can think of and know that’s how your spirit looks and it needs a makeover like NOW!
Philippians 4:8 “Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute, if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, dwell on these things.”
Romans 12:2 “And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect.”
Happy Tuesday!!
