“I Sell Women”

BBOG1On April 14, 2014, an Islamic extremist group, Boko Haram, invaded a school dormitory in Nigeria and lured over 200 girls away by posing as military soldiers coming to rescue them. The girls were in hiding during a wrath of gun fire so they believed that the men were there to save them. It didn’t take long before they knew who they really were and it was not for their well being.

Hopefully many of you have been following the story and understand the severity of the matter. These men are against Western education, Christianity, and any Muslims that they believe are traders. After their leader Yusuf was assassinated, it was guaranteed that they would seek revenge. Though many innocent people have died at the hands of these extremist, young girls are the most recent targets. There are reports that the girls are being sold as child brides and sex slaves for as little as $12. The sad truth about the matter is that many people don’t feel at all connected to this tragedy. It’s thousands of miles away on a continent that many may never visit. The girls are without names that anyone beyond their families and friends would know. So many people will write this off as a sad state for Nigerians even after they post #BringBackOurGirls to their social media sites… I mean, it’s all about appearances right?

The Voice

Everyone says when you hear God’s voice move in the way that he instructs you to move. No hesitation. No second opinions. Just go! That sounds good in theory but lets take in to account someone who has been unsuccessful at shutting down all the other clutter that fills their thoughts. What’s the secret to extracting His voice from all other voices that fill your head with things contrary to what you believe He is telling you to do. Not all things contrary have to be bad. They can just be logical, safe, or comfortable. In other words, if you chose to follow the contrary, you wouldn’t necessarily be doing yourself or anyone else any harm… or would you? PRO-GOD

“I was given grace to carry that story,” she said.“My story is a voice for the voiceless.” – Molly Anne Dutton www.huffingtonpost.com

You’re going to have to trust me on this one. I know many of you don’t know me so you don’t know the integrity that I walk in daily. But please know that I would not say that something came from God, unless I truly believed it did. Trust that I don’t play with that! So when I tell you that I have had a blog with only 3 words saved to my drafts for almost a month I’m telling you the truth. God placed on my heart to write a story on abortion. Yes, abortion and I so didn’t want to get into that. But I had the narrative in my head and knew the direction that God wanted me to go, I just couldn’t seem to get it on paper.  I tried to reason with Him on all the reasons I shouldn’t but I knew that I would eventually lose the battle. I sat in front of my computer each day staring at those 3 words asking Him to show me how to get started. It’s such a heavy subject and a very sensitive area that I wanted to make sure He led the way so I would do it justice. I never want to mess up anything He tells me to do so if it meant that it would sit in my drafts until I heard clearly from Him than so be it! Continue reading “PRO-GOD”

A Night with India

BWPOO498_044-071_V2The older I get the more life proves to me that there are no coincidences in who we meet, when we meet, what we hear, and when we hear it. God has blessed me with so many unexpected experiences that have changed my life that I should not have been surprised when it happened again. Back in the summer I got word that India Arie would be on tour again after years of being out of the spotlight and I jumped on securing tickets. I was bummed that she wouldn’t be in DC until October but figured I had waited this long for her, what’s a couple of months? Little did I know that her arrival would be perfectly aligned to when I needed to hear her most. It wasn’t just her songs. It was her narrative throughout the concert and the quotes she displayed on the screen just above the stage. It was her energy and her realness that bought it all home for me. Continue reading “A Night with India”

What About Me?

answer-girl-colorI can’t be the only one that has questioned if God had forgotten about me. I know I’m not the only one that has thought that I had done too many things outside of His will that I would be spending my days trying to prove that I was worthy of His love and attention. I believe that some of the most difficult things to discipline are your thoughts. The enemy can take up residence there and have you lose your mind, literally! It’s so dangerous when you don’t know how much God loves you and when you question His heart towards you. If ever you or I have any of those feelings rise up in our spirit again, be reminded of this:

There’s not enough good deeds, “right” decisions, giving of self that we could ever do to deserve God’s love. We don’t do things pleasing to God to earn is love. His love is a gift! All we have to do is receive!! We seek after His will because we want an intimate relationship with Him. It’s the same as a mother and father’s love for their child. They love you from the time you were first formed in the womb. They don’t say “let me find out how obedient he/she is” or “let me see if he/she turns out to be all that I imagine my child to be” before I know if I love them. Their love is unconditional and without warrant. Still, even their love can’t match God’s love. Continue reading “What About Me?”

Big Picture, Small Frame

Everyday I ask God to show me what my focus should be on for the day. Who’s going to need my attention? I pray that my eyes and ears are alert to hear from Him and distinguish His voice from all others. I ask that I decrease and that Holy Spirit increases so that I don’t block anything that He has planned for the day. I must admit, sometimes I get ahead of myself and I start to measure who I am against who I know I want to be. I see the big picture all the time! It’s very difficult for me to focus on each step during the process. There’s nothing wrong with big picture thinking as long as you don’t neglect the many, many steps in between. Follow the Leader

When God gave me the vision for BASH Films, I had no idea where it would lead or how I would get started. It all began with a grad school assignment and quickly flourished into something much bigger than me. I remember asking God to show me examples of people who are doing what I believed He was calling me to do. You see, I work in entertainment and faith based content back then was pretty much non-existent. The shows that were centered around faith were “churchy” music video shows that only “church” people would watch. But God was calling me to the masses. He wanted me to infiltrate a massive machine that glamorizes promiscuity, drugs, material wealth, and beyond. His vision for me was to represent women in the light that He had created them to be instead of what the limelight had molded them to be. I couldn’t see a pathway to do what He wanted me to do so I second guessed if it was even Him who gave me the vision. Was I crazy? I needed to stick to the script, work my way up the ladder, and be grateful to be in the business period. Continue reading “Follow the Leader”

Things Happen

In May 2010, I was in a pretty bad car accident. Four of my girls and I were headed to our sister’s law school graduation when a car ran a stop sign and we hit them head on. I had the car less than 6 months and the entire front side of the car was destroyed. Now I love my car, but I love our lives much more and on that day miracles happened. The major impact was on my side and my air bag did not deploy. Now, I understand that the air bag is a safety precaution but in many instances it causes more damage than it does good.images

Psalm 22 For Fighters Only!

Okay so, I shouldn’t keep being surprised by how God works but I am! I had made up my mind that I was going to skip my blog today. Wasn’t feeling it and I really didn’t have a concrete word or story to tell until… I decided I was going to spend this raining night getting into my Word and just going with the flow. I didn’t have a lesson to follow along with or a CD, I just randomly turned to a chapter in the book of Psalm and lo and behold I run across a chapter that spoke directly to what I was feeling.

If you can relate to this chapter, you’ve been through some things. You’ve felt hopeless. You’ve felt like God has forgotten about you. You’ve felt beat up and abused. You’ve felt taken advantage of and mistreated. You’ve felt abandoned and left to figure the mysteries of the world out all alone. In short, you’ve felt like giving up. Let this be encouragement to you that you are not alone, but even better, that God has it all under control. After reading this one chapter, the visions that God placed on my heart became much clearer. Everything, and I mean everything I go through, whether I bought it on myself or not, is a teachable moment to build me up so that I’m equipped to take over! I don’t see how people do it without a relationship with Christ and I don’t ever want to know. The fact that I’m able to have a GENUINE smile on my face regardless of what I’ve been through or face ahead is a testament to His unmatched love and for that I can’t help but smile.

Psalm 22 is for fighters only. It’s not for the weak or those that quit in the midst of adversity. It’s for those that no matter the situation, no matter how many attacks come against them, how impatient or helpless they feel… after the tears, they brush themselves off and stand on what they believe. They know where their help comes from and they’re not afraid to call on Him. Continue reading “Psalm 22 For Fighters Only!”
