You Could Have Been An Ant

Writing this blog has been more about accountability and discipline than anything else. I write as though I have thousands of followers waiting to read what I have to say. Or as if  I  have an editor waiting for me to meet a deadline that could potentially put me at risk of losing my job if I don’t get it in on time. It’s a fight to keep this type of mind set because the other part of me wants to revert back to the reason I quit the last time. Who’s checking for it really? I have a laundry list of things that I need to prioritize that actually do have repercussions… bill paying, grocery orders, appointment scheduling… the list goes on. But writing makes me happy. It brings me closer to God and quite frankly it’s the one thing that I do just because I want to. The beauty of being under the radar is that you have no outside influence on what you should write. It’s only what you want to say and how God leads you to say it.

This week’s entry is all about my new favorite podcast “The Same Room” featuring Charlamagne Tha God and Harmony Samuels in episode 2 titled “God’s Purpose For You.” I couldn’t summarize all the gems in this episode if I tried but I’ll do my best to speak on just a few of them that sparked a fire in me in hopes that it will encourage you to check out the full episode and potentially share it with others. ARCHIVE: “MALI IS”… DOPE!

I can’t think of a better way to voice my excitement about seeing Mali Music in concert tonight  than to repost one of my most favorite blogs originally posted this past June. It’s not many artists who I’ll pay to see and especially new ones! Well tonight I’m checking out my newest fav at the legendary Howard Theater. I know he won’t disappoint so in honor of him and his powerful, uplifting music; I invite you take a walk down memory lane with me as I dig into my archives to reveal just what makes Mali so awesome in my eyes. Enjoy!! I’m on my way to the Mali party as we speak!  Continue reading “ARCHIVE: “MALI IS”… DOPE!”

Lecrae’s song “Say I Won’t” is on steady repeat these days. The beat is fire but the lyrics embody everything that I want my life to stand for. Rebellion is natural for me. I don’t fit into crowds and never wanted to be a part of one. I do my own thing when and how I want to do it without any company or approval from pretty much anyone. I have my select few that I may bounce ideas off of but those are people that I hold in high regard and know beyond doubt that they have my best interest at heart. So when I ran this track that pretty much dares anyone to say what you can’t or won’t do I was hooked. But God, in true form, took it to another level and gave it a much bigger meaning. Lessons of a Love Song

Leela James

I heard this song on the radio last night and it bought me to a place that I haven’t been in a long time. The passion in her voice grabbed my attention and drew me into each lyric. I searched forever until I figured out the artist and boy was I excited when I found it! I immediately went to download “Fall For You” by Leela James on iTunes. There’s something about a song that can pull you in by the sincerity of the lyrics. You all should know by now that I’m not hung up on just listening to Gospel music. There are lessons all around us and if we pigeon hole ourselves into songs that only fit a certain standard we miss out on life lessons and opportunities for God to show us how omnipresent He really is. “Mali Is”… Dope!

Yeah the pain came and the rain fell down
But I maintained through the skirmish
Its cause I love you and you’re worth it
Yeah you could be anything to them
But to me you’re perfect
I fight for you, I’m right for you
I’m here on purpose.

MaliIsMusic is a powerful drug. It can change your mood with the change of a beat and in this case it can change every word that you wanted to write. At least that’s what happened to me today. I scrapped my entire blog entry after listening to just one song on Mali Music’s debut album “Mali Is.” Let me just say that I could write an entire blog about almost every song. It’s just that dope. But for now, I’m going to dive into the sheer genius and power behind a song titled “Fight for You.”  My goal is to know every verse by the end of the week and with as much as it’s been repeated today, I think I’ll pull it off. I haven’t been moved this hard by a song since India Arie’s “Break the Shell.”

I’m taking the time to dissect this song for a few reasons:

1. The lyrics are POWERFUL.

2. Super religious folks won’t give it a chance because it’s not “gospel” they can jump and shout about.

3. It speaks to my own struggle with pursuing God’s will and gives me so much life!

I Need Just A Little More Jesus… What??

erica-campbell-all-white-long-hairIt wasn’t too long after I turned on the radio that I heard Erica Campbell’s newest single “I Need Just A Little More Jesus.” I actually heard the song a few times before and thought to myself … “What??” But this time I listened to as much of it as I could stand and promptly turned it off! I’d rather ride home in silence. I know, I know… how dare I say something about a gospel song with the name “JESUS” in it?! Well here’s the thing, I’m not moved by religion, I’m moved by relationship. In any relationship you must know the person you call “friend.” I’ve spent enough time learning Him to know through His own words that He’s done all that He is going to do. What more can you ask of someone who died for you? He not only died but resurrected and is with us every single moment of our lives. He is known as “I AM” meaning everything you will ever need He is. So tell me what more can He be for you or do for you?? …. I’ll wait. The truth is we tend to not recognize His presence until we’re beat up and torn down by our way of life. The song would make sense if it was about needing to make more time for Jesus but the way it is now is just dumb. Yes dumb. Continue reading “I Need Just A Little More Jesus… What??”

Uncharted Territory

george-tandy-jrI witnessed something remarkable this morning. So much so, I had to reschedule the post I originally planned and squeeze in a few minutes to write this one. The Steve Harvey Morning Show gives me life some days! Aside from the foolishness that gets me laughing and helps me wake up in the morning (I’m so not a morning person!), it’s usually something Steve says or does that motivates me and inspires me to keep pushing. Today was one of those special mornings. I tuned in at the end of a song that I may have heard a few times on the radio but not much. I stuck around to see who the artist was and to my surprise Steve Harvey had him on the phone. His name is George Tandy Jr. and the song is called March.” I mean, I thought it was a great song but nothing could prepare me for the awesome display of support from Steve. A Night with India

BWPOO498_044-071_V2The older I get the more life proves to me that there are no coincidences in who we meet, when we meet, what we hear, and when we hear it. God has blessed me with so many unexpected experiences that have changed my life that I should not have been surprised when it happened again. Back in the summer I got word that India Arie would be on tour again after years of being out of the spotlight and I jumped on securing tickets. I was bummed that she wouldn’t be in DC until October but figured I had waited this long for her, what’s a couple of months? Little did I know that her arrival would be perfectly aligned to when I needed to hear her most. It wasn’t just her songs. It was her narrative throughout the concert and the quotes she displayed on the screen just above the stage. It was her energy and her realness that bought it all home for me. Continue reading “A Night with India”

IN THE MIDDLE – DANCE OFF!

I’ve been so looking forward to this post! God gave me this idea on my ride to church a few weeks ago and since I write my blogs in advance, I had to wait to share. It’s so out of the box for me but I love it. Let me first let you in on a little tidbit to put everything in perspective. Last year was the MOST challenging, heart wrenching, loneliest year of my life. REAL TALK! I can admit that I was in a very dark place for months. I just wanted time to stand still to give myself time to recoup, figure things out, and just be for a minute. Life was carrying on and I was hanging on to the bumper by a string. I had some very trying days that tested my faith. I had many angry days at God. I was sad much more than I was happy. Simply put, I was just getting by. I can’t say that every day I made a decision to praise God but I know for a fact that the times that I did, even in the midst of my pain, is the reason I’m in one of the happiest places of my life this year! No, my life is not perfect. Yes, there are things that still need fixing but my perspective has changed. I have renewed hope. I have a clearer vision and most importantly I have a more intimate relationship with God BECAUSE of what I went through. Continue reading “IN THE MIDDLE – DANCE OFF!”

Behind the Lyrics

I’m one Christian that still rocks out to some secular music. I’m more choosey nowadays but I don’t see all secular music as being bad. Honestly there’s some gospel music that is worse… yeah there really is! Gospel music that is not Word based is more detrimental to your walk than listening to a secular song. Secular music is a form of entertainment… Gospel music is about praise and worship… but if what you’re singing can’t be found in the Word then what is it really? Just some words that a songwriter thought sounded good and would evoke the right emotion so it was laid to track. I’m not really trying to judge what makes good/bad gospel music. I’m more trying to shed light on the hazards of failing to guard your ear and your heart. Continue reading “Behind the Lyrics”
