PARK IT!

I don’t know why I still get so amazed at how God speaks to me. It starts with me noticing something that is so common place and seeing it through a new perspective. It’s like I have new or child-like eyes that are trying to process something that, on a normal day, I would walk by without a glance. Let me paint the picture for you…

smartcar1Everyday I go to work, I park in the same garage. I can admit, I’m not the most fond of the parking attendant and it often drives me nuts when I’m unable to find a space and then forced to leave my key with him. Well this particular day, I found a space albeit a bit further away than I’d like. As I’m walking to the door, I see what I thought was a space right outside of the doorway but as I got closer I realized that someone parked their “toy car” in the spot… okay, okay it was a smart car or something! Very miniature!!! And the first thing I’m thinking is, “they don’t even need that big ‘ole GOOD parking space!!!!” I was so annoyed for no other reason than I wanted to just push it out the way with my big ‘ole “normal” size car! I know it’s petty but that’s just how I was feeling that day.

Little did I know, God had a lesson in all of that. Here’s the picture he painted… Continue reading

“Your behavior is a reflection of what you believe.” ~ Pastor Dwayne Freeman

wordsLet me start by saying this: if every Sunday you leave church without even one word to pull on for the rest of the week I’m telling you that you’re in the wrong church! I don’t care whose auntie, momma, or grandma was baptized there in 1932! If your life isn’t impacted by being connected then it’s time to GO! Every Sunday I feel recharged and it lasts well beyond the pews. I carry it with me into my week. Some lessons resonate more with me than others but it’s never a waste when I attend church. Yes, the pastor definitely has a major part on what you get while sitting in the service. However, what you do with that word after you leave is 100% completely up to YOU. Continue reading

My High Tower

Psalm 9:9 “The Lord also will be a refuge and a high tower for the oppressed, a refuge and a stronghold in times of trouble (high cost, destitution, and desperation).”

Imagine you think you’re about to be hit with a pillow stuffed with feathers but instead it’s one stuffed with bricks. That was me. It would have been great if I was still on my writing hiatus but as fate would have it I’m back at it and things are so out of sorts for me right now. I’m looking for the “Do Over” button like now!

There are times when I write out of joy and revelation knowledge and there are times where it is out of complete and utter desperation. That’s where I am today. Not that I’m desperate for readers or public approval but out of the need to feel closer to God so that I can make sense out of senseless situations.

writingHere’s what I know about me. When I pray I don’t usually hear anything from God right away. My prayer time is often me thanking Him, pleading to Him for instruction, asking Him for protection, etc. More often than not, I hear him at the most random moments! I can be driving in my car, listening to a song, having a conversation with someone and He’ll just interrupt me. However, what I’ve learned most recently is that my special time with God is when I write. It doesn’t matter if it’s a pen and pad or a keyboard, that’s our official quality time together.

I didn’t realize that until today. So often I’m delayed in writing because I want to know what my message is before I sit down. That’s been one of the main reasons I went on such a long hiatus earlier this year, but God revealed to me as I’m typing this that He waits for me to follow His instruction to sit down and write so that He can give me the words as I go. Sometimes I know a head of time but in times when I feel unprepared (I’m a habitual planner!)  I still need to show up. Take that as a lesson, if God leads you to do something that you don’t feel ready or able to do just show up! He’s waiting on your obedience, not your perfection. Continue reading

My Hand Is God’s Hand

Let me paint the picture for you. Imagine being a mother or father of a child that you tried desperately to conceive and them being held by the hands of a killer. A rifle placed at their temple and being told to denounce your faith for the sake of keeping your baby alive. Imagine the amount of confidence that a parent must have in their faith to be able to confess their faith in that situation? Can you honestly say that you could do it? Would you even give it a thought? If I’m going to remain transparent with you, I’m not sure I could. Real talk. Having that level of awareness of where I am increased my respect for those that are presently faced with that challenge and die daily based on their decision.

Lessons of a Love Song

Leela James

I heard this song on the radio last night and it bought me to a place that I haven’t been in a long time. The passion in her voice grabbed my attention and drew me into each lyric. I searched forever until I figured out the artist and boy was I excited when I found it! I immediately went to download “Fall For You” by Leela James on iTunes. There’s something about a song that can pull you in by the sincerity of the lyrics. You all should know by now that I’m not hung up on just listening to Gospel music. There are lessons all around us and if we pigeon hole ourselves into songs that only fit a certain standard we miss out on life lessons and opportunities for God to show us how omnipresent He really is. Are Your Toes Wet Yet?!

“You can’t be afraid to dip your toe in the thing that you think God wants you to do even when you’re unsure.” ~ DeVon Franklin

Devon

When you ask God for answers be prepared! He uses many life experiences to show us how in charge he truly is and this past Sunday, He used DeVon Franklin in a powerful way. Rarely am I bought to tears but when someone can wrap all of your emotions into one lesson and shed light on issues so real to what you’re going through, you know it’s God. If you feel trapped and too afraid to move but too afraid to remain the same, this is for you. If you’ve stepped out on faith and the world seems like it’s crumbling around you, this is for you. If you simply love God and want to grow in your relationship with Him so that you don’t miss a beat, this is for you. To get directly to the message click the photo on the left to watch any of the 3 services. For the 8 am service begin video at 01:19:14. For the 11 am service start video at 01:03:00 and for the 1 pm service you can begin at 01:19:56. You can’t go wrong with any of them. Trust me I’ve watched them all! So check them out and let me hear from you! Happy Tuesday!!

“God may have allowed the storm to arise because you would never do what you needed to do without it.”

“There is “more” in my spirit that won’t let me settle or be complacent.”

“Real life starts when you get up out the boat.”

“Anything I pray for I will prepare for!”

Real Comfort Food

sunset-straight-road-1920x1080In the perfect world, I would get up every morning excited about the day that lies ahead, especially on Tuesday when it’s time to release my blog post. The truth is, although I’m grateful for every day that God blesses me with, I’m not always all that thrilled about what the day brings. For the past few weeks, I’ve had quite a few down moments. Moments when I wish I was under an invisible cloak so that I wouldn’t have to deal with anyone or anything until I could get it together. Of course, that wish never came true and when I thought I was about to completely lose it, I retreated to the Word. It’s a shame to admit that much of what I was going through was because I was focusing on all the things that were not going in my favor. Instead of praying, I was worrying… and worrying a lot. Eventually I stilled my mind long enough to disappear into the pages that redefine the meaning of comfort food. Continue reading

Hunger Pains

Many of you know that I’m a huge supporter of DeVon Franklin. I stumbled upon him a few years ago and have followed his journey from a far. Last year, I had the honor of meeting him at The Merge Summit held in LA and to say that that moment made an imprint would be an understatement. There’s something to say about someone who you just know is unapologetically themselves. He is genuinely a kind soul with a courageous spirit and a heart for people so it’s no surprise that on this past Sunday I would tune into all 3 services at One Church International where he was the guest speaker. Yes, I watched the 9am, 11am, and 1pm!! That’s how on point he was and how hungry I am to get this thing called life right! The message was the same in all 3 services but the delivery was different. I got something different from each one and I wish I could regurgitate everything in this one article but it would be a book in itself. Instead, I’d like to do one better and share the link to the 1pm service for all of you to witness. (Click here and scroll to about 01:11:30 for the message.) Since I know that some of you won’t watch for lack of time or even lack of interest, I’ll just share a few nuggets that I believe were said directly to me! No seriously, he was all up in my life and yes I was yelling at the screen! Ha! Continue reading

“What’s the move? Can I tell the truth? If I was doing this for you. Then I have nothing left to prove…” ~ Drake

My friend put it best when she said, “I can take the meat from something and discard the bones.” She was speaking in reference to receiving the “meat” from a lesson and discarding any untruths. In her case, she was referring to different styles of pastors. In my case, I’m referring to any person that has a voice and platform whether it be spiritual or secular. Now I know that may not be the church’s idea of what’s appropriate but it’s one of the many ways that God speaks to me. It’s a beautiful thing when you walk in the freedom that comes with knowing the God you serve and hearing his voice in the midst of so many other voices including your own. There are days when I may want to listen rap lyrics or indulge in gossip sites and I fall back because I feel led to listen to a lesson from a pastor or mentor, read a book, or play a praise and worship CD. I may not be in the mood for it at the moment but every time I obey, I get a reward for it. Something about what I’m listening to will speak to a situation I’m experiencing directly or prepare me for something lying ahead of me that day. Continue reading

“I Sell Women”

BBOG1On April 14, 2014, an Islamic extremist group, Boko Haram, invaded a school dormitory in Nigeria and lured over 200 girls away by posing as military soldiers coming to rescue them. The girls were in hiding during a wrath of gun fire so they believed that the men were there to save them. It didn’t take long before they knew who they really were and it was not for their well being.

Hopefully many of you have been following the story and understand the severity of the matter. These men are against Western education, Christianity, and any Muslims that they believe are traders. After their leader Yusuf was assassinated, it was guaranteed that they would seek revenge. Though many innocent people have died at the hands of these extremist, young girls are the most recent targets. There are reports that the girls are being sold as child brides and sex slaves for as little as $12. The sad truth about the matter is that many people don’t feel at all connected to this tragedy. It’s thousands of miles away on a continent that many may never visit. The girls are without names that anyone beyond their families and friends would know. So many people will write this off as a sad state for Nigerians even after they post #BringBackOurGirls to their social media sites… I mean, it’s all about appearances right?
